I talk about this in this week's episode of the podcast. The full power of the state threatening good people who are simply trying to do their jobs, a thankless job at that, is the type of strong man tactics you’d expect from third world countries not the longest continuous democracy in history.
As the article mentions, all of this is predicated on the false narrative that noncitizens are voting in large numbers, which has never been proven. The Trump administration is pushing every boundary to try and sway the upcoming midterms, but one of the most frightening attempts is the push to control the voter rolls.
“Ahead of the midterm elections, the Justice Department has sued 30 states and D.C. for their voter rolls, but so far it has lost every one of the 23 legal challenges that have been decided. Under federal law, states run the nation’s elections — not the federal government — and states have historically not been asked to hand over their voter rolls to the federal government.”
The idea that the party in power should wield power over the voter rolls is so profoundly disturbing it should chill every American to the bone no matter their political affiliation.
